Media management

This chapter covers the setting options of the Media Asset Manager, the import of media files and some basic settings for how media files work in the CMS.

Information on how to use the Media Asset Manager can be found in the user manual.

What is the Media Asset Manager?#

The Media Asset Manager, or "Media Manager" for short, is used to manage media files and enables process-oriented document management. Basically, media files in imperia are treated exactly like imperia documents. This means that the upload takes place along a workflow. This workflow can be extended using workflow plugins.
Since media files are imperia documents, the system automatically versions and archives them. This gives you access to older versions of an asset and the associated change history at any time. In the Media Manager, you can also see whether your media files are referenced by imperia documents.

Difference to document browser#

The Media Asset Manager, instead, only displays the managed media files. The Media Asset Manager also has some additional functions that are not useful in relation to imperia documents. These functions include the focus point, the asset actions and the management of variants.benutzt.

Media categories#

In the Media Asset Manager, you are very flexible when it comes to structuring your media files. Just like imperia documents, they are structured in categories. In the category settings, you only need to activate the "Media files" switch so that the category is declared as a media category and is therefore displayed in the Media Asset Manager.
Media categories require a workflow that contains an upload step. You use the settings in the media categories to define the access permissions for the media files in them. As a rule, you also define the upload template in the media category, in which the conditions for uploading media are configured.

In chapter Upload template you will learn how to create an upload template.

Moving media files#

Moving media files and media categories is done with the same mechanisms as restructuring documents and categories.

Importing media files#

If you want to import a large number of media files into the Media Asset Manager, you can do this either on the command line or via a graphical user interface.
The command line tool is more powerful; smaller numbers of media files without special requirements can be imported more conveniently via the interface.

Both types are explained in detail in the Media import subsection.

Configuring the Media Manager#

Apart from the user-dependent saved settings of the Media Manager, which are described in the user manual, there are some global configuration options. You make these settings using configuration variables that you add in the site/config/system.conf file.

The Configuration subsection explains the setting options in detail.
